printers scanners

I hope this isnt a repeat
I need to start by saying that I have only been playing with computers for 2 years and have no training so if something I say sounds stupid it probibly is.
The Epson R220 printer works great on X86 using the XP drivers. It installed easy and works great.
I wish that I could say the same for scanners. I installed the HP scanjet 4670 using the XP drivers and the installation completed saying that everything installed but when I tried to use the scanner nothing worked. I had an icon for hp director on the decktop but it must have been corupt because it would only give a portion of the screen and stop. I played around it the search and found a shortcut for scanner setup and when I opened it I was able to set up the scanner minus the grayscale test. I then searched for the hp director and sent it to the desktop. This Icon worked. I can scan pictures but if I change the DPI setting off the default 200 the scanner freezes. I can use the document scan function and even though its default setting is 300DPI it works great and I have had no problem converting to word documents.
As a side note: Ive also got my Verizon Wireless card working. I had to update my Bios due to a confict with the PC5740. I kept getting fatal errors even in XP but working great for the past couple weeks.
If anyone has any suggestions on the scanner please let me know.
